Definition of Discourse
"Discourse"
is derived from the Javanese word "wocono". "Wocono"
also from "read" which means "read". In
English, "discourse" is derived from the Latin "discursus"
which means "running to and from". According
to Chafe, discourse used with various purposes by various researchers. But,
in general, the discourse is seen as something that goes beyond the boundaries
of the separate sentences. Discourse
and text are used interchangeably and both refer to the language units larger
than sentences. And,
discourse, according to him, refers to the study of the unit, a branch of
linguistics that is equivalent to other branches, such as morphology or syntax.
